Educators
Without legislative action, nearly 138,000 Illinois college students will be left out in the cold on January 1, 2010, because the State of Illinois has cut funding for the Monetary Award Program (MAP) by nearly $200 million. How many of these students are at your school?
Don’t let this happen to your students! Spread the word on campus and do something about it!
Write, e-mail, call or visit your Illinois lawmakers in person!
Knowledge Is Power
Update your school’s Web site and your school’s social networking pages (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) with information regarding MAP grant funding cuts and direct them to www.saveillinoismapgrants.org for more information on how to take action.
Contact Your State Legislators
Write to your state legislators or call them on designated call-in days (October 13 and October 27) to tell them to provide funding for MAP and to make student financial aid a priority when allocating state resources in the future. Go to www.elections.il.gov/DistrictLocator/SelectSearchType.aspx?NavLink=1 to search for your district or officials. Click here for a sample letter.

I am a Residence Director, and am aware of many students who are now unable to return to school this coming spring semester. I think that the most appalling part of this decision was that it did not favor the school year at all. If funds were needed to be retracted from student aid, then there are several other ways Governor Quinn could have implemented to wean the state away from obligations with IL students.

Seniors and our youth are the number one priority of our government—if you drop the map you are sending a message to all voters!

I urge the Illinois legislatures to reconsider cutting funds for the MAP grants for students. Many of the students I work with here will be affected! Some will not be able to attend college because of this action! Let’s invest in the future of our state–our young people!

At a time when our economy is faltering and our students need education to get ahead, they need the financial support the MAP grant provides now more than ever!! This move will only increase the gap between have’s and have-not’s in terms of education, which is not what we want!!!
